Green

So this past week I attended a discussion panel at the Equinox Summit at the Perimeter Institute. It has got me thinking about what I can do to save energy and how to make the place I live more energy efficient. I found a website that lists 50 ways to help the planet http://www.50waystohelp.com/ and a youtube video that was made my some kids that is pretty funny but also has good ideas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD7YYePk5BY. Hope you guys appreciate this, but also leave comments on ways you save the planet. :)

  1. I always get excited when I see links to "how to be green", and then read them all, and then realize I already do most, if not all, of the things listed on here. I'll try and list a few others:
    - shop at thrift shops - goodwill, salvation army, and then there are fancy ones too where you can get used designer stuff if you're in to that kind of thing
    - don't throw out clothes - again, give them to charity
    - try not to throw out books. Take them to used book shops. If they don't want them, see if you can donate them - sometimes they'll send them overseas to people who need them. I've also seen some cool projects where people take the hard covers off kids books, then fill them with blank paper - cool little notebooks as a result. Good for gifts too.
    - If your clothes are too full of holes and things you could tear them to pieces and make quilts out of them. This is my next project.
    - Compost all your food scraps! This is such a huge amount of house-hold trash. You will notice a difference.
    - If you don't want to install solar PV, solar heating or solar hot water, you can generally find a utility provider who will give you the option to purchase 10% green power, 25% green power, so on up to 100% green power. https://www.bullfrogpower.com/signup/signup.cfm?p=5
    - install low-flow water faucets, shower heads, and toilets. If you have an old toilet and don't want to replace it, you can do something simple like put a brick in the tank - this will result in less water use per flush (since there's less water in the tank now)
    - dry clothes on a clothes line
    - try to buy locally grown, organic foods
    - plant some trees
    - use soaps and cleaning products that are environmentally friendly - free of petroleum products, biodegradable and phosphate free
    - avoid using disposable plastic stuff - glass tupperware is best, regular tupperware is also better than saran wrap and plastic baggies

So some other ideas. Let me know if you have any more creative ones as well.
